How to Clean a Ceramic Hob: Challenges and Tips
A ceramic hob can make a big difference to the appearance of your kitchen, both in regards to cooking style and an aesthetic modern touch. There are a lot of perks that come from cooking on a ceramic hob, including a fantastic amount of flexibility when it comes to heat transmission. That being said, like with all ovens and hobs, making the time to clean after every use can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. Burnt on stains can be tricky to lift off again.
Here at Ovenclean we clean cookers and hobs professionally and are more than happy to help. Our team of oven cleaning experts are on call if you want your hob looking shiny and new again. Professional cleans are an inexpensive way of ensuring that your ceramic hob remains bright and transmits heat in the way that it should.
If, however, you are in between professional cleans, then we have asked our team of professional oven specialists for some top tips to keep the surface of your ceramic hob fresh.
The Challenges When Cleaning Ceramic Hobs
When considering how to clean ceramic hobs, it is important to consider the qualities of ceramic as a raw material. Although it’s lovely and glossy, when used as a cooker top, ceramic is prone to scratches. This means that, when cleaning a ceramic hob, it is important to be extra careful with the surface, and avoid the use of scouring pads where possible. It’s also good to be careful when cooking – too much flair when tossing your stir fry could lead to scrapes being inflicted on the ceramic by the pan!
The best thing to do is actually one of the simplest pieces of advice we can give when looking at maintaining ceramic hobs for years to come. Give your hob a wipe down after every use, before any food spillages can be burnt on. It’s that easy. Warm water and washing up liquid may be enough, but for tougher marks there are specialist cleaning products designed to dissolve kitchen grease.
Remember though – it is always important to check the label of any oven cleaning product you are planning to use on your hob to ensure it is compatible with the surface. We would recommend avoiding abrasive cleaners, like the many cream cleaners available on the market. These could damage the surface of the ceramic, remove any printing on the hob, and leave residues that cause a nasty smell when heated. Those smells not only linger around the kitchen but can embed themselves into your food whilst it is cooking, creating an unpleasant aftertaste.
If there are food deposits after cooking which have been heated or burned into place, you can use a specially angled glass and ceramic scraper. These types of scrapers are specifically designed for the job, which will lift these off without damaging the ceramic surface of your hob. Scrapers are easily available from hardware stores and your typical online retailers.
How to Clean a Ceramic Hob
If you would like to give your ceramic hob a clean then don’t worry – the process is incredibly simple. With a bit of elbow grease you too can get your hob shining again.
Where a professional clean is recommended every six months, you can easily maintain your hob with the below process to keep it fresher for longer.
- Remove all bits of food and spillages so that you’re left with the remaining stains
- If some of the stains remain, use a scraper at an angle of 30 degrees
- Apply a small amount of cleaning fluid
- Leave the cleaning fluid for a couple of minutes so that it soaks into the dirt and grime, making it easier for the dried food to be removed
- Then, using a clean J-cloth or microfiber cloth, wipe away the stains
- If you need something a little tougher, balled up kitchen roll should give a little extra scrubbing power without being too harsh
- Give everything a final wipe over to bring back the modern-looking shine
And just like that – your ceramic hob should be clean again. This is a fantastic way of keeping your hob fresh and helping ensure it remains stain free.
